Attitude of Gratitude
When you fail or when someone annoys you what is your response? How are you spending your energy?
If you want to live a longer and better life you need to have a perspective of gratitude.
You never know when that failure or annoyance will have a positive effect on your life later. Maybe there was a lesson you needed to learn before you could progress to a better place. Failures and annoyances show us what we need to improve or what we don’t want in our life.
If that person in the grocery line loudly complaining is annoying you then be thankful. They are showing you how you don’t want to act. What is a better use of your time? Complaining about them and how annoying they were or being thankful that you know how you don’t want to act? Which is a better use of your time and energy? It takes far less energy to be thankful and grateful than to be worked up about something or someone else. Don’t you have better things to do with your time and energy? Why are you giving it all to that annoying person?
This concept of giving your energy away is one that I have really worked on in my life. People think I’m calm and easygoing, but the truth is that I don’t want to waste my time and energy on pettiness. When people come to me, especially those chronic complainers who complain about everything, I just smile and nod. I acknowledge them but I don’t feed the flame or try to solve the problem. If they don’t have that to complain about they’ll find something else. Don’t waste your time and energy. Send them on their way.
Do you get annoyed and upset when a plan or idea fails? This is an area I really struggle with in my life. I like to have a plan and complete it. It often throws me off balance if I have to change my plan. Today is a good example. I planned to build a new layered garden bed. I went outside to start my project. The first step is to lay down wet cardboard and then layer on top. We have a cold front coming in today. The wind is gusting and blowing things everywhere. I could either wait until another day or try to chase down flying cardboard. I decided to wait. I could have gotten upset because I had to change my plans but I didn’t. I decided to come in and work on my blog posts. I originally had that scheduled for tomorrow. I could have gotten upset and gotten nothing done or I could change directions and work on something else. I had a choice to make. Got something else done or get nothing done. Today I won. I made the right choice and got something done.
The funny thing is I am willing to bet that something is going to happen tomorrow. Something that would have prevented me from writing my blog posts. So today I am going to be grateful. I am going to have an attitude of gratitude. I have finished my blog posts for the week. A goal I really stress about until it is done. I have gathered most of my garden bed supplies so I can put that together when wind dies down. With my work complete I get to spend a relaxing day with my family tomorrow.
In this season where everyone is rushing around and worrying about presents and food, slow down. Be grateful for what you have. Be grateful for the lessons you have learned in your life. Be grateful you know what you don’t want in your life. Be grateful for a new direction. Be grateful for your life itself.
Adopt an attitude of gratitude and see how it changes your life.
