How to Make Your Dreams Happen in Five Minutes or Less

You have a lot of dreams.  You have a lot to accomplish.  But you never seen to get anywhere.  Those dreams are just dreams.  They have been sitting there languishing for a while.

What can you do about it?  How can you get a jump start on your dreams?

One of my dreams is to have a field of poppies.

One of the best things I have ever done to get things done in my life is to listen to Chalene Johnson’s 30 Day Challenge.  She’s got several good pieces of advice.  It’s worth your time to check it out.

The one thing, the most important thing that I learned?  Put a list on your phone!  It seems so easy right?  I mean why didn’t I think of that?  Okay I did think of it.  I have tried lists on my phone, but Chalene’s approach is different. I don’t know about you but I have a tendency to add gobs and gobs of stuff to my to-do list.  There are so many things on my list that nothing ever gets done.

So here’s the trick.  Only put 3 to 5 things on your list for today.  And make sure that at least one item is the next step to get you to your goal.

All that other stuff needs to be on different lists.  Not today’s list.

I have lists for today, this week and projects.  My second favorite list after my today list?  It’s my someday/maybe list.  I got this from David Allen’s “Getting Things Done”.

You know all of the piddly things that aren’t really important but you want to get them done someday?  Put them on your someday/maybe list.  And all those things you think you might want to do someday?  Put them on your someday/maybe list.

Don’t clutter your “Get It Done Today” list with items that aren’t really important.

If it’s not the next step towards your goal.  If it’s not going to cause financial problems.  If it’s not going to cause the death or unhappiness of a child or animal.  It doesn’t belong on your today list!

Those other things?  The ones that aren’t really important?  You can work on them after the important stuff gets done.

If there is no more time left in the day to get them done?  Well did you get the important stuff done?  Great!  Why are you worrying about the unimportant stuff?  It’ll still be there for you to get done after you get your important stuff done tomorrow!

So get your important stuff done.  Take 5 minutes every morning or evening to make sure what is on your today list is really the stuff you need to get done TODAY.

What’s your important stuff today?
