Make Your Own Rules!

Make Your Own Rules!

So in my last blog post I told you to “make your own rules.”

And I could hear you as I typed that saying, “But Rebecca, How Do I Make My Own Rules?”

I think I subconsciously had my own rules all along but this concept really clicked when I read Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project.

She calls them her Secrets to Adulthood but they are your rules so you can call them anything you like.

But I think it’s important that you do have rules or guidelines for your life in place.  They will be a sounding board when you are faced with a decision or a crisis.

Here are some of Gretchen’s rules:

  1. People don’t notice your mistakes as much as you think.
  2. It’s okay to ask for help.
  3. Do good, feel good.
  4. Bring a sweater.
  5. By doing a little each day, you can get a lot accomplished.

Here are some of my rules:

  1. Always bring a sweater or jacket to the theatre.  Be it a movie or play you are seeing.  If you aren’t cold someone else will be.
  2. Always keep snacks in your bag.  This will stave off the hangries if something happens and your meal is delayed.
  3. Always have chocolate.  I love chocolate.  It makes me happy.
  4. Always have water or iced tea at hand.  I get thirsty.  Hydration is important.
  5. Yoga fills your soul.  If yoga doesn’t do it for you find something that will.  Soul filling and peace within are important.
  6. Knowledge is key.  I feel happiest when I am learning.  I always have some video, book or webinar going on my kindle or computer.
  7. Always bring your kindle.  My kindle makes me happy.  If I have an unexpected wait I can always read a book.  I guess this would also hold true with a paper book or phone.  But I don’t love my phone.  I do love my kindle.
  8. Plan ahead.  I like to know what I’m doing.  I don’t fly by the seat of my pants very well.
  9. Make a list.  This is very helpful so you don’t forget to buy or pack things.  Put a simple list on your phone.  It’s great!
  10. Set GOALS!  This is the most important rule for me.  If I don’t set goals I don’t get anywhere.  You must know your destination if you want to get there!

If I’m going somewhere where I might be cold I grab a jacket.  It doesn’t matter if anyone complains or thinks it’s ridiculous.  I want to be comfortable so I’m bringing my jacket.

If I’m going somewhere I always bring a snack.  It doesn’t matter if my husband assures me we’ll be home before lunch.  We might run late or I might get hungry.  My snack is in my bag.

If I’m going somewhere I always bring my kindle.  If my husband runs into a store for “just a minute” I don’t sit in the car and wish he would hurry I pull out my kindle and read a chapter or four.

All of my rules are in place for my happiness.

I want to decrease the stress and worry in my life as much as I can.

No one will worry about your happiness more than you.

So take care of you!

I’m not talking about not taking care of others or being selfish.  I’m talking about self care.

If you don’t take care of yourself you can’t take care of others.

Make sure you can be in a mind frame to be happy and spend the day with a smile on your face.

If you don’t have any rules then pay attention as you go through your day.  Once the concept is in your mind you’ll have the thought, “Oh, that’s one of my rules.”

I think everyone has them they just don’t consciously think of them as rules.

Knowing and acknowledging your rules for life will make your life happier and your decisions easier.

And that is important.

Because what happens if you are invited to a party that starts at 9pm but you know one of your rules is to wake up at 5am so you can get your important work done?

Well that’s your decision.

You can follow your rules and say, “I’m sorry I have to wake up at 5am,” because you know this guy gives these boring parties every weekend.

Or your can recognize that it’s a once and a lifetime event with dancing, happy people and it will make you happy so you can break your rule.

It’s all in your hands.  The rules are yours.

So what’s your most important rule?  Let me know below in the comments.

The Start

RebeccasRoadmap.com

The start of new projects, ideas and creations can be hard.  Where do you start?  There are so many things you must do.

If you are starting a business you must have a blog or website, you must have a facebook page, you must tweet to people, you must have an Instagram account.

Now Periscope has come on the scene and that is the latest must do.

If you are starting a book you must have it in the proper format.  Itmust contain at least 30,000 words.  It must be professionally edited.  It must have an awesome cover.

If you are starting an art journal.  You must use this special journal.  You must use these special pens.  You “must” follow the rules!

So slowly take a deep breath!  Now take another one.  Now for the third.

Are you feeling calmer?  Great!  Me too!  Let’s take this one step at a time.

Now who is making the rules?  The ones that everyone says you must follow?

The people selling the stuff that they say you need.

If it’s not those people then it’s the people who are listening to those very people and believing that they must have this stuff.

That you must have their stuff to complete your project.

And I’m telling you now that’s just not true.  You “must” start where you are.

Start with what you know and branch out from there.  You must use the  easiest, quickest route to get your stuff done so you can share it with the world.

That’s what’s important.  That’s what youmust do.

It’s not important that it’s perfect.  It’s not important if your family thinks it’s stupid.  It’s not important that it’s not how everyone else does it.

Do it your way.  That’s what is important.

Make your own rules!  That’s the only path to true happiness.

What “must dos” are you leaving behind today?

The Worker Ant

Are you a Worker Ant?

Are you a worker ant in life?

This question came to mind as I was driving to work this morning.

Today is the first day of school so I left the house a little earlier than usual.  As I turned the corner I saw other cars also turning onto the main road out of our subdivision.  As we all fell in line I had a vision of worker ants one after another off to do their jobs.

I thought, “Is this really what I want for my life?”

I know the answer is NO but this visual really drove home the point.

I don’t want to be a worker ant in life following everyone else and working on other people’s projects and agendas.

I want to be an Ant Queen orchestrating everyone else’s life.  Okay maybe that’s a little too far but you get my point.  I want to be in control of my own destiny and working on my dreams not working on someone else’s dreams.

I want to travel my own road not someone else’s road.

So what road are you on?  What’s your destination?
